It has been months since I first came across the prospect of making homemade dulce de leche. It all came in an idea for a recipe (more on that in a future post). Of course I took to pinterest - and google, to figure out how to make my own dulce de leche. I mean, one ingredient recipe?? COME ON SOMEBODY!
For those who have not already jumped on the Dulce de "Train" there are three different common methods to making it. I have tried two. First there is the microwave method, which I horrendously failed at. Second, there is the stove top method - which I will expound on in a second. Finally, the oven method.
TODAY I TOTALLY ROCKED THE STOVE TOP METHOD, and Mr. (and my) Instant's mouth is in HEAVEN!!!
There are two stove top methods. One dangerous method, one safer method! The dangerous method is to first remove the label from a can of sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk). Submerge it in a pot of water. Simmer for 2-3 hours. The danger?? If the can, at any time during the cooking process comes out of the water (heated water does evaporate, so you must check it frequently and add water as needed), the can could explode and you can have yourself a potentially dangerous and sticky mess.
...was to remove the label off the can of SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK (not evaporated milk). Poke 3 holes on the top of the can, forming a triangle. Place the can in a pot and add water to the pot till 3/4 of the can is submerged in the water. Let simmer for 2-3 hours. I let the can cool for a half hour, then removed the top of the can, poured out the dulce de leche goodness, gave it a good stir and into my BELLY!! NOTE: Since the top is not submerged in the water, what you can see through the poked holes will still be somewhat more on the white side than caramel brown, but don't be fooled - a good stir once its done will even out the color.
Make some Dulce De Leche goodness today!! You will not be disappointed. Drizzle that baby in your coffee, on your ice cream, on a cookie, in a peanut butter sandwich. Or just stick your finger in it and put it in your mouth!! :)
Have a dulce day!
